If you read my 2015 Favourites post, you’ll remember that Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation got my top foundation of the year title. It’s a well loved foundation but I haven’t seen many comparison posts between it and the newer Maybelline Superstay Better Skin Foundation. They are two of my most used foundations so I wanted to share my thoughts on them.
The packaging for both foundations are quite similar. Both are housed in a clear glass bottle, showing the foundation shade inside. This is pretty typical for drugstore foundations and it’s definitely a positive in my mind. Maybelline Better Skin comes with a pump (yessss) while Maybelline Fit Me has a twist off cap that you need to pour foundation out of. I do prefer the cap on Fit Me – it feels sturdy, unlike the plastic cap covering the pump on Better Skin, which I’m afraid will break before I use the foundation up, but having a pump is just so much better.
0 – 1 Better Skin
Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless has 12 shades from the very lightest (Porcelain, the shade I have) to quite dark. The foundation is pink to neutral in undertone depending on the shade. I can’t speak for people with darker skin, but I was very happy with the shade I picked out – it’s perfect for my winter skin tone! It’ll be too light in the summer, but I am just so tickled that there was something at the drugstore that matched my skin perfectly.
Maybelline Superstay Better Skin foundation has 12 shades that range in tones from yellow to neutral, so there should be an undertone that fits a lot of skin tones. Unfortunately the shade range isn’t as impressive, and the shade I have (Porcelain, the lightest) is darker than it’s Fit Me Matte + Poreless counterpart. I am uncertain if this is echoed through the range as a whole, but it’s something to watch out for.
On my skin both foundations look the same shade-wise in photos, though in real life my husband said that he could tell there was a slight difference on each side of my face. So they’re definitely not shade dupes, though they are very near.
Neither beats the other in this category, so the score is 1 – 2 Better Skin.
Application is going to be different for everyone depending on skin type or what tool was used. I have normal to oily skin and used a brush to apply both foundations in the photos below.
There isn’t a huge difference between the applications of the foundations, though Fit Me Matte + Poreless has slightly more coverage than Superstay Better Skin. Both foundations are buildable, though Fit Me can get streaky with a brush. I ended up buffing in the streaks with my fingers and it looked fine. I do prefer wearing both in single layers as it can start to feel heavy on the skin as you build, but adding foundation doesn’t take away from the appearance of the skin.
Better Skin is the lighter of the two, it felt like I was wearing very little makeup. I could still tell I had makeup on my face, but it wasn’t as heavy as Fit Me. It isn’t as evident in the photos, but I found that Fit Me covers the pores around my nose and cheeks better that Better Skin.
It’s close, but I have to award the point to Fit Me because I like how my skin looks just slightly better. 2 – 2
Wearing both foundations is worry-free: I don’t find either rub off quickly or go splotchy. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless has a longer wear time than Maybelline Superstay Better Skin, though. Kind of funny considering the name is “Superstay” hmm?
As for the skincare properties claimed in Better Skin – I can’t say if there are benefits or not. I know that neither clog my pores, but I don’t wear Better Skin daily, so I haven’t experienced any specific benefits.
3 – 2 Fit Me
It was close and I definitely enjoy wearing both foundations, but Fit Me wins for being more long wearing and covering up the large pores around my nose/cheeks.
Have you tried either of these foundations before?
