I don’t carry a makeup bag with me. The only makeup I will ever take out with me is the lipstick I’m wearing that day, otherwise my makeup has to survive the day without touchups. What I do carry around is an Emergency Bag – the things that I will need while I am out an about and anything that might make me feel more comfortable if I’m feeling anxious. I saw Natalie recently did a video about this, and because it helped me get to know her a little bit better I thought I would share what I take with me everywhere as well. And maybe it will help anyone who reads this that is also dealing with anxiety.
What is worse than being caught out and about with a pounding headache? Not a lot. Maybe suddenly getting your period. But that’s why I carry everyone I might need with me – a tampon or two (though I’m out right now, oops), pain killers, a comb to tame any flyaways and something to clean my glasses. These are all the just in case things that I don’t use all that often, but that definitely give me piece of mind.
If I do feel anxious, the best thing that I can do for myself is feel comfortable. Pajama pants, a baggy hoodie and a pony tail are optimal, but it’s not always possible to do that. So I keep a lotion stick, lip balm and hand sanitizer with me. The worry stones and mint gum are much more important, though. I can’t go anywhere without them – they are what get my through anxiety attacks. If I pop a piece of gum in my mouth the chewing motion + the mint let me feel a little bit more in control of what’s happening, while the worry stone helps to ground me. I always focus on feeling grounded, feeling my feet on the floor, that kind of thing. It’s not fail-proof, but it helps me get through it.
As I said I don’t keep makeup with me often, though I do like to take this little BITE Beauty compact mirror with me. It’s another just in case measure, but sometimes it’s nice to be able to check to see if my hair is sticking up at weird angles or if I have lipstick on my teeth without going to a bathroom. Blotting papers are also nice, though I’ll admit that I never use them. I take them with me because I should use them, but it’s just not something I think about.
The one thing that is super useful are my headphones. Music is another one of those things that help distract me from feeling anxious for long enough that hey, maybe I’ll even stop being anxious.
Do you keep an emergency bag? What do you keep in it if you do?
